How to Import an .ics Calendar File Into Apple, Google or Outlook (Step by Step)

July 19, 2026

If you've downloaded a calendar file — a .ics file — and you're not quite sure what to do with it, this guide has you covered. It's genuinely simple once you've done it once, and it works the same way whether the file is a sports schedule, a work roster, or anything else.

First, what is an .ics file? It's a universal calendar file — the standard format that Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook, and almost every other calendar app understand. One file can hold a single event or an entire season of them. When you import it, all those events drop straight into your calendar — dates, times, locations, and reminders included. Because it's a universal format, the same file works everywhere; you don't need a special app.

On an iPhone or iPad (Apple Calendar): Tap the .ics file — usually from your email, your Files app, or a download link. Your iPhone will recognise it and offer to add the events; tap 'Add All', choose which calendar to add them to if prompted, and you're done. If tapping the file just previews it, open it from the Files app instead, or download it first and then tap it there.

On an Android phone (Google Calendar): The cleanest way is through Google Calendar on a computer, then let it sync to your phone — but you can do it on the phone too. Save the .ics file to your device, open it, and Android will usually offer to open it with Google Calendar. Confirm the import and the events sync to your Google account, appearing on every device signed into it.

On a computer with Google Calendar: Open calendar.google.com in your browser, click the gear icon (Settings) then Settings, click 'Import & export' in the left menu, click 'Select file from your computer', choose your .ics file, pick which calendar to add it to, and click Import. Because it's on your Google account, it's now on your phone too.

On a Mac (Apple Calendar): Double-click the .ics file, or open Calendar and choose File then Import, pick the calendar you want the events added to, and click Add. On Windows (Outlook): Open Outlook, go to File then Open & Export then Import/Export, choose 'Import an iCalendar (.ics) or vCalendar file', select your file, and choose Import.

A few troubleshooting notes. If nothing happens when you tap the file, download it fully first, then open it from your Files or Downloads folder rather than from a preview window. If the times look wrong, a good calendar file is built for a specific timezone — this is exactly why SportzCal asks for your timezone before it builds your file, so every game lands in your local time. And if you end up with duplicates, delete the duplicate events and re-import once.

Importing an .ics file is a one-minute job you'll only need to do once per calendar. Once it's in, the events live in the calendar you already check every day — reminders and all. If you came here from a SportzCal download, that's the last step: import the file, and your team's whole season is now in your calendar, in your timezone, ready to go.
